Tips on Handling Election Stress, by a Baltimore Trauma Therapist
Stressed About Election Season?
Me too! You certainly are not alone.
While I cannot offer anything that will eliminate your stress, here are a few tips to help you manage it:
Don't overindulge in the news. While it is good to stay informed, try to find a balance so you do not get sucked down any rabbit holes.
If this is hard for you, set certain times when you'll read/listen to the news and stick to it.
On that note, don't get sucked into social media, either.
Set limits and boundaries so that this does not increase your anxiety.
Plug into things that are in your control, in ways that feel manageable to you, and try to let go of things that are out of your control.
This could mean sending some postcards or making sure your people are voting, but not spiraling out about the "what ifs" that you can't do much about.
Listen to people in your life who think differently than you.
Don't listen with a plan of attack, but instead, with curiosity. When we listen, we can find connection.
This does not have to mean agreement, but it can lead to more understanding and less contempt.
Check in with your emotions and tend to them.
Notice any anxiety, grief, sadness, or even hope that arises.
No need to try to change them. Just notice them and honor them, thanking them for how they speak to your values and beliefs.
Make sure you find ways to take care of yourself during this time.
That could mean a lot of different things. Spend time in nature, hang out with friends, read a book, do some yoga, make some art. Whatever brings you a spark of joy.
